Take heart, AIPers! We are not alone in the search for dry drinks! More and more people are realizing the benefits of limiting their alcohol consumption. Personally, I really enjoy a good glass of dry wine, but I also understand that my body finds alcohol to be extremely inflammatory.

I don’t want us to feel deprived. There are definitely ways to enjoy a non-alcoholic drink without feeling like we are drinking juice at the kiddy table. For this drink, I wanted something fall-like, without tasting just like apple juice. I brewed a spiced apple and sage syrup, poured over some ice in a cinnamon and coconut sugar-rimmed glass, and topped it with a splash of seltzer water. Ta-daaaaaaa! A grownup dry drink!

Tips for success at mocktailing

There are two things that will really help you to enjoy mocktailing. The first is that to make sure to serve yourself in a beautiful glass. I got these lovelies at some random store I can no longer recall, but I did spot these similar dishwasher-safe crystal rocks glasses that I thought were beautiful on Amazon.

The second tip is to make mixing syrups ahead of time, and keep them in the fridge. That way, you are always ready to make yourself something delicious when the mood strikes.

This Apple Sage Splasher Mocktail is the perfect fall drink for grownups who would like a dry option. Just a kiss of sage keeps it from being too frilly. Try it!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups 2 unfiltered, unsweetened apple juice

  • 2 TBSP 2 fresh lemon juice

  • 1 TBSP 1 honey

  • 2 2 fresh sage leaves

  • 5 5 dried cloves

  • 1/2 1/2 cinnamon stick

  • 1 tsp 1 ground cinnamon

  • 1 tsp 1 coconut sugar

  • Seltzer water

  • Apple slices for garnish (optional)

Directions

  • Place apple juice, lemon juice and honey in a small saucepan over high heat. Place sage, cloves and cinnamon stick in a tea ball, or right into the juice. Boil, stirring frequently, until liquid has reduced to 1 cup. Carefully remove tea ball (or straight spices and sage) with a slotted spoon. Let syrup cool completely in the refrigerator.
  • Mix cinnamon and sugar together on a plate, and spread it out a bit. Prepare another plate by filling it with water. Turn a rocks glass upside down. Dip the rim in water on the plate, then in the cinnamon sugar. Turn the glass right side up and fill with ice.
  • Pour 1/4 cup cooled apple syrup over the ice. Top off with seltzer water. Stir with a swizzle. Garnish with apple slices.
